Roofing 101

COMPOSITE SHINGLESComposite (asphalt) or fiberglass shingles is the most common roofing currently in use. It is composed of asphalt impregnated paper with mineral granules coating the exposed surface. Numerous colors and styles are available to enhance the design of your property. Shingles are easy to install, require little maintenance and are easy to repair.
DECRADecra Roofing Systems manufactures several lines of stone-coated metal shingles. These shingles resemble architectural shingles — tile, shake, and asphalt shingles. DECRA uses a zinc/aluminum-coated steel with an acrylic bonded layer of natural crushed stone. The stone gives the shingles a color finish which resembles traditional materials. These stone-coated shingles resist sun fading, UV rays, rot, and moss infestation. The metal shingles weigh less than traditional roofing products and offer greater longevity.
WOOD SHAKESWood shakes and wood shingles are manufactured from western red cedar, cypress, pine and redwood trees. Shakes are split from logs and reshaped by manufacturers for use. They are thicker at the butt end than shingles; generally one or both surfaces are split to obtain a textured effect. A split and resawn shake has a split face and sawn back. A taper sawn shake has a natural taper and is sawn on both sides. Wood shingles are sawn on both sides and have an even taper and uniform thickness. When applied to shingles, the industry terms “Perfection” and “Royal” mean 18 inch and 24 inch lengths, respectively.
R-PANELR-Panel is easy to install and can be used in a variety of applications including roofing and siding material for commercial, agricultural, residential, self storage, and equipment screens project. Exterior applications include: Total roofing area, an accent to a roof in conjunction with other architectural elements of design, metal siding, decorative fencing, restaurants, and movie sets. Interior applications include: Focal point or backdrops such as a backsplash in a bath or kitchen, textured ceiling, and wall treatments.
TORCH DOWN ROOFINGSimilar to tar and gravel roofing, the torch down roof consists of layers of fiberglass and polyester with bitument that are added to the regular tar and gravel layering system. These extra sheets are torched down in the overlap areas during the installation process, using large flame throwing torches that melt the asphalt at the seams to join them together, which is the origin of the name “torch down roofing”. The final result is the vulcanization of a large rubber sheet onto a fiberglass base. Also called modified bitumen, due to the mixing of asphalt with rubber compounds, torch down roofing provides additional strength and resistance to a flat or low sloped roof. It is not, however, suited to areas prone to high rainfall or snowfall, and has an average life expectancy of about 15 years. A torch down roof is also significantly more attractive than a standard tar and gravel roof.
MOP DOWN ROOFING (ASPHALT BUILT UP)Asphalt built up is the most common form of roofing used for low sloped roofs (2:12) in America, constituting a large percentage of the overall number of roofs in the United States. Asphalt built up refers to several layers of reinforcing felt between asphalt and plies, or coal tar bitumen, which are covered with a surfacing material that serves as a ballast and holds them down, also reflecting UV rays. Usually the surfacing material used is gravel, and for this reason it is sometimes also called “tar and gravel roofing”. There are, however, other kinds of built up roofs, including smooth Asphalt built up, and Ballasted Asphalt built up. Depending on weather conditions, the average life span of asphalt built up roofs is approximately 10-20 years
